Notes pertaining to assessment:

1)      Include the scientific name of the organism in the title of the PowerPoint.

2)      The WORKING OUTLINE you submit is your starting outline be very thorough and in-depth. A sample can be found here. Your final outline should be much more extensive.

3)      Concerning classification;

  • Identify the Class the organism is in.
  • Give the number of species in the Class.
  • How many groups are in the Class?
  • What group is your organism in and how many species are in the group?
  • Give the characteristics that place the organism in that group.
  • Give the characteristics of closely related groups.
  • Include taxonomic keys for identification, as well as, distinguishing between closely related organisms.

4)      Concerning the text-only PowerPoint.  The information provided should facilitate other individuals becoming experts on the organism.  Remember thoroughness and quality.

5)      Final PowerPoint presentation.  After the text-only PowerPoint is complete, add in appropriate pictures and/or visuals.  Make sure the pictures you use are of your organism and not a similar organism.

6)      Information used in the PowerPoint, both text and visuals must be attributed to a source.  Wikipedia is not an acceptable source!  Therefore DO NOT us it!  If the information is obtainable online, that information should be accessible from your slide that includes the information.  Include hyperlinks on the slides.

7)      Sources used in the science field are to be listed alphabetically by author in a single list at the end of the presentation.  Do not number the sources.  The list of sources has the heading REFERENCES. The science format for listing sources is very different for that used in the humanities, especially regarding capitalization, underlining of titles, punctuation, indenting, and spacing.

8)      A hyperlink is provided on the Hillcrest High School Science website home page on how to create correct references for your presentation.  The link can also be found at; http://bcs.bedfordstmartins.com/resdoc5e/, click on documenting sources in the sciences for examples.

9)      The Hillcrest High School Science website also includes much more information about Biodiversity Projects.  The science website can be accessed from the Hillcrest School website available at; http://hillcrest.k12.ar.us/, Click on student activities and then on science.
